Yesterday, while out hunting for more eggs, I heard the noise of some young girls giggling from near the stream that runs beside our property. As the sound grew closer and closer I noticed a dad and 4 girls(1 was his) investigating & playing along the stream. After a little conversation, I invited them over to visit our farm.
The girls were very excited to meet our goats & chickens. They asked a lot of good questions, which thankfully we had the answers to. One of the questions was wondering what the orange bits on the ground were. We told them it was parts of pumpkins that the goats had been eating. They all looked funny and asked, "Goats & chickens eat pumpkins?!" "Yup, and they love them" was our reply. The dad mentioned that they had about 4 pumpkins back at their camper at the campground just down the road and said he could bring them by on their way out of town. We gladly accepted, and told them that they could have 1 dozen eggs and 1 Qt. RAW goat milk as our "thank you" to them. The girls ran around trying to catch chickens and picking up various chicken feathers, and they also had happy faces as they pet our goats.
At around 6 pm they stopped back by with the pumpkins they had promised, and the trade commenced.
This morning I cut open one of the pumpkins, collected some of the seeds for planting next year. I set the halves down on the ground for the hens and it didn't take long for the hens to start swarming them!
