Livestock Guardian Dogs - LGDs.
Our top priority this year is to make sure our herd will be well protected from predators at the new property. We looked around at different places & at different breeds. We decided it would be best to buy a male Great Pyrenees and a female Anatolian Shepherd.
Our male Great Pyrenees will be coming from O'Vation Farm in Tennessee, and he was actually born on February 22. Well, we think he was. The dam decided to escape her pen and make a deep den under the central support beam of one of the buildings, hiding her precious litter from everyone and everything. They don't know exactly how many pups she whelped, or the male/female ratio. She is showing her wonderful mothering skills, and that is great. However, we would appreciate it if she would cooperate with her owners sometime soon and allow them to get a good look at how many puppies she had, and maybe a picture or two that we can share with you all.
Our female Anatolian Shepherd will be coming from Freedom Star Farm in New Jersey. This one will be a bit longer of a wait, as the dam has not been bred yet, and we are not sure when she will be bred. We can hardly wait until we can share the good news with you all that our little girl has arrived, and a picture or two.
This pair, once they have settled in and gotten beyond their puppy behaviors with proper training, will be able to protect our herd from the coyotes, bobcats, and black bear.
